Lights are the cheapest way to make a build unforgettable in a dark con hall — and the most common way to end up with a dead prop by 2pm. Two things decide whether it works: how you diffuse the light, and whether you actually budgeted the power.
LED strip or addressable pixels
Plain strip for a single steady colour; WS2812B pixels for animation and colour changes.
Microcontroller (optional)
An Arduino Nano or Xiao drives addressable animations from a few lines of code.
USB power bank or Li-ion pack
A power bank is the safest, most convention-legal option and recharges anywhere.
Inline switch and fuse
You need to turn it off, and you need it to fail safely.
Diffusion material
Frosted acrylic, sanded resin, EVA foam or a layer of wadding. Bare LEDs always look like bare LEDs.
Soldering iron + heat-shrink
Twisted-and-taped joints fail from vibration on the con floor. Solder them.
A steady glow needs a strip, a resistor and a battery. Anything that pulses, chases or changes colour needs addressable pixels plus a microcontroller — a big jump in complexity and power.
Multiply the LED count by roughly 20mA (up to 60mA for a white addressable pixel), then size the pack for the full day. Under-powering is why props die halfway through a convention.
Route wires through hollow props and along seam allowances, and leave a service loop at every joint. Retro-fitting wiring into a finished, painted prop means cutting it open.
Push LEDs away from the surface and put frosted acrylic, sanded clear resin or thin foam in front. The distance between LED and diffuser is what removes hot spots.
Solder every joint, heat-shrink it, and anchor the wire so movement pulls on the anchor rather than the joint. Add a quick-disconnect wherever a piece comes off.
Somewhere you can find blind, in gloves, without undressing. Test the full circuit assembled and worn before con day.

Plain 5V LED strip for a single steady colour — cheap, low power, easy to wire. WS2812B addressable pixels when you need animation, colour changes or per-LED control, driven by a small microcontroller.
A 5V USB power bank is the simplest and safest option: rechargeable, widely allowed at conventions, and it usually has built-in protection. Size it by summing the LED current draw across the hours you will actually be wearing the build.
Diffuse them. Leave a gap between the LED and the surface, then put frosted acrylic, sanded clear resin, thin white foam or wadding in front. The gap matters as much as the material.
